Sometimes it’s good to be selfish
Growing up, we were all taught to think of others and not be selfish… but is that how it should always be? Sometimes it’s good to be selfish. You can’t always compromise your happiness to please others or give positive things without receiving any in return. Any relationship like that is bound to crash and burn, whether it is a friendship or romance. It is healthy to think of yourself before others at times.
Do you have that one friend that likes to always be in the spotlight? What about the friend that likes to put you down about something you’re excited about? … Would that person even really be considered a friend? I know I have a friend that is like this… the irony is that it is someone who I have always considered a good friend.. yet she has always been like this. If the conversation is not about her or something that affects her, then she is uninterested. And if she is feeling down, you have to plead her to tell you what’s wrong. And if you don’t plead then she says that you don’t care.
On the other hand, you listen to whatever she has to say and pretend to be interested even if you couldn’t care less, and if you are upset or in a bad mood she doesn’t bother to at least ask if everything is ok. Sounds like a great friend to have right? Could be. I guess this is when the “it’s good to be selfish” part comes in. This friend could be someone who you have shared many memories with and is close to your heart. You just have to figure out how to deal with him/her. Put yourself first at times. If there is something you really want to do and your friend does not, don’t compromise your happiness just to please them. Go ahead and do your own thing. If the friend complains that you are leaving them out then explain that it is something you want to do and went ahead and did it without them because of their attitude towards the subject. Stop telling/sharing the things that you know your friend will criticize in order to also keep yourself happy and satisfied with your accomplishment or whatever it is.
Wow I sound like a total biatch… but hey you gotta do what you gotta do and sometimes being selfish is part of it.
